Science Friday....where science meets art.
Each Friday students participate in a unique activity that links science with art.
Here are some of the highlights of SciFri!
Neuroscience.
Neuroscience: Are you right-brained or left-brained? Students answered questions that helped them determine if they were more right-brained or left-brained. The classes discussed the attributes of both, the learning challenges and advantages that come with each, and the careers that might be best suited for right or left brain dominance.
And then we created....
Hemisphere Hats!

The Scientific Method.
The Scientific Method: How Far will a Paper Airplane Fly? Students created their own paper airplane designs after a class discussion on how planes actually fly;
what is thrust, lift and drag?
They wrote a hypothesis on their record sheet and the testing began! Each flight was recorded and students were sure to include distance, wind direction and any changes in their report.

Color Diffusion.
Color Diffusion: Is Black Really Black? Students watched a video on the "science" of color and light. They made a prediction about what might happen to black ink on a paper towel when soaked in water. After observing and recording the results, they tried other colors. The results were....well, colorful!
Mars Rover Landing.
Mars Rover Landing and Spacecraft 3D. Students watched a video on the Mars Rover landing and then got up close....and I mean, up close....to the Rover! There was discussion about the environment of Mars and what it might be like to live there. We looked at some fast facts and the students went to work designing homes, space suits and transportation vehicles.
Nature Drawings.
Nature Tap App: Exploring, observing and recording nature. Students explored nature through this Audubon app for the iPad. They were able to zoom in on species to record detail, listen to bird calls, locate species on a range map, and explore plants and animals by color and shape. They created some beautiful drawings and took screen shots of their species to keep in their digital portfolios.
Creatures of Light.
Museum of Natural History: Bioluminescence. Students took a tour of the Creatures of Light Exhibit and explored bioluminescence through beautiful photography, amazing videos and hands-on experiences through this free app. They chose a creature to feature in their luminous drawings using metallic colored pencils and black paper.
